Almost three years after his last involvement with the Czech national side, Hertha Berlin midfielder Skacel was a late call-up to the Euro 2008 squad after Daniel Pudil was ruled out of the tournament with a broken hand.
Skacel cancelled a holiday to join up with his team-mates at their Austrian training base.
Skacel's call-up vindicates his decision to leave Southampton on loan, feeling he needed to play in a top league to get back in Karel Bruckner's plans, although he has played only five games for Hertha since his January move.
Skacel is a name known to British fans after twice playing under George Burley, first at Hearts - scoring 16 goals the season they finished second in the SPL and won the Scottish Cup - and later at Southampton.
